This comic was inspired by the many many times that, when I was in college, I heard people say that the oboe was one of the worst sounding instruments. I always disagreed with them because I think it sounds absolutely beautiful. Then they would counter with, “Well, I mean when it’s played badly,” which always baffled me because doesn’t every instrument sound terrible when it’s played badly? I think the oboe is right up there with cello and horn in terms of overall beauty of sound.

Panel 1:Ed: How can you say that? The oboe is one of the most beautiful instrumentes out there!
Thom: Not when it is played badly.
Panel 2:Ed: Well no instrument sounds good when it's played bad!
Panel 3:Thom: Yeah but when oboe players sound bad they sound bad.
Panel 4:Ed: But they have the ability, given a lot of time, to sound gorgeous. Kind of like the ugly duckling that turns into the swan.
Thom: More like a mauled Jar Jar Binks that turns into Jessica Alba.
