This week we are featuring Tim Hinton for our workspace. Enjoy!
1. WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Tim Hinton and I’m a music arranger, composer, drill writer and show designer. You can hear my music and find out more about my business at www.timhinton.com. I also am one of the hosts of the Marching Roundtable podcast at www.marchingroundtable.com and am the manager and co-creator of the Judges Academy, an online training course for judges that I developed with Dr. Joe Allison. www.JudgesAcademy.com. I run all of these businesses from this desk in my home office.
2. WHAT HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE DO YOU USE?
My computer is a 27″ iMac (3.2 GHz Intel Core 13, 16 GB.) One of my best investments was for a second monitor to double my work area. I don’t know how I ever got by without this. I use Finale 2012 for music writing and arranging. Although it’s a very complicated program to learn, it does everything and I’ve been using it for over 20 years now so I love it. I use Pyware 3D for drill writing, a program I really also admire and enjoy using. The new 3D visualization of the drill has been a huge help in “seeing” what I’m writing.
I use a “RollerMouse Red” from contour design. This is a two handed mouse that saved me from carpel-tunnel and I truly believe is the reason I can get through a season of drill writing. We did a podcast about this which you can hear at http://www.marchingroundtable.com/2013/09/11/242-rollermouse-a-great-tool-for-drill-writersor-anyone/ or see their website at http://ergo.contour-design.com/.
For the podcast we record on Skype using a TASCAM DR-05 recorder, XENYX302USB mixer, and Audio-technica P48 Cardioid Condenser microphone. I record intros on Audacity using a Blue Snowball mic.
3. WHAT IS YOUR WORKSPACE LIKE?
My workspace is in the master bedroom of our house. (We use a smaller bedroom as our master because I spend all day in this space and like the room and openness of its location to the rest of the house.) The desk pictured was created with parts from IKEA. To the bottom right in the picture you may see my keyboard which I use to input the music into the computer. Above the keyboard and not pictured is my stereo system which I use when listening to music to pull the music by ear when writing. Elsewhere in this office is another desk and my work closet which holds a multitude of supplies used for podcasts, Academy shirts and supplies, music files, etc.
The lamp you see in the picture is one my father made for me that used to be in my school office next to the fish tank when I was a band director. I feel fortunate to get to work from home and create my own schedule. Having done this for 22 years I doubt I could return to a regular 9 to 5 job.
